South Beach Diving
South Beach has some excellent snorkeling and scuba diving locations. Beginning in 1981, Miami-Dade County's Environmental Resources Management has developed and maintained artificial reef sites just offshore. Ocean bottom "park" attractions include sunken boats, cargo ships, army tanks, and an oil platform. These provide shelter for fish, and thus increase the diving experience. This includes a dozen or so sunken wrecks in depths ranging from 55 feet to 140 feet.
Beginning in 1998, other underwater attractions were placed in shallow water (less than 20 feet deep) just off South Beach. These include concrete and rubber tetrahedrons, and underwater sculptures (e.g. Nikki, a concrete mermaid due east of Penrod's on the Beach restaurant).
